Travelers who want to escape the crowds can visit places where tourist numbers are much lower. Spending time in these lesser-known locales also provides many opportunities to discover new and intriguing parts of life. These four remote travel spots are known to have fewer tourists and smaller crowds.

Faroe Islands

This archipelago of Denmark is considered to be its own autonomous country and is known for its expansive rugged landscapes that have been largely left alone by mankind. Situated in the North Atlantic approximately 320 kilometers from Scotland, these islands are also known for their interesting wildlife inhabitants, like the Faroese puffin, Eurasian wren and Faroese sheep. Despite being a location that’s largely free of tourists, travelers can still spend some time visiting the Nordic House and the National Museum of the Faroe Islands.

Tuvalu

Situated in the South Pacific, Tuvalu is a Polynesian island country consisting of three reef islands that boast beautiful lagoons ideal for snorkeling. Receiving only around 2,000 tourists in all of 2015, Tuvalu is also one of the most difficult places to get to, but finding the right flight from Fiji is definitely worth the effort. Islanders are known to showcase traditional dances for visitors and sell authentic handcrafts that reflect Tuvalu’s unique culture.

Phu Quoc

This island off the Vietnamese mainland offers a more secluded alternative to Ha Long Bay. Long stretches of remote beach allow visitors to enjoy some alone time taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of the environment. Motorbikes can also be rented to travel along the red dirt roads that lead to other great nature spots where tourists are few in number. Roadside vendors are known to sell shellfish and other foods and merchandise to passing travelers.

Kotor

Located on a largely unknown tip of Boka Kotorsky Bay, this seaside city in Montenegro rivals the quality of other cities along the Adriatic Sea without being as crowded. The walled medieval city itself has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features cathedrals, palaces, and other landmarks that have stood for centuries. Many of the local restaurants also serve some of the finest Mediterranean dishes around.

These four destinations are off the beaten path and may be perfect for someone who doesn’t want to have to compete with a lot of other travelers for scenic views or stunning photo ops. Despite their reclusiveness, these travel spots offer many opportunities for fun and exploration.
